1. Got inspiration? Show us!

If you have a specific pose, mood, or lighting style in mind, don’t be shy — show us your inspo photos! Screenshots from Pinterest or Instagram? YES. A magazine cover you love? Perfect.

Don’t stress about recreating an exact shot. Think of inspiration as a guide — not a script. Show us what works for YOU and let us take care of the rest. Click here to start exploring pinterest.

THE INSPIRATION: Julia Roberts, bare feet, effortless, chic

2. Your clothing choices should represent you

Your outfit should be something you feel confident and comfortable in and it should also reflect your brand. The best headshots capture authenticity, so pick an outfit that feels true to your personality and profession.

There are no rules! If you’re a corporate leader, a polished blazer might be your go-to. If you’re a creative, maybe a stylish yet relaxed look fits better. Think about what you want to convey with your photo when choosing your outfit. There is no wrong answer.

3. Bring a prop if it contributes in a meaningful way

A prop can add depth and personality to your photo, and it can be a great way to clue others into what your business is or the story you’re trying to tell. Props aren’t for everybody and are not essential – it’s a personal choice!

Are you a chef? Bring a kitchen tool. A writer? A notebook. Unsure if you want to use a prop or not? We will give you our professional opinion and we can go from there!

4. Posing

We will guide your poses and create a comfortable environment so you can look and feel your best. It’s our job to help you pose you correctly, so take the pressure off your shoulders that you should “know” how to do it – and let us do what we do best.

Looking at different poses on Pinterest or Instagram can also help you feel more relaxed as you’ll already have an idea of what we may ask you to do.

5. Communicate with us!

One of the most common concerns we hear is, “I hate how I look in photos,” or “I’m so uncomfortable in front of the camera.” But here’s the truth — you just haven’t had the right experience yet. We believe that with the right photographer, anyone can look and feel amazing in photos. Our approach is all about creating a fun, relaxed environment where you feel like you’re just hanging out with friends. When you’re comfortable, the camera captures that – and not just a posed version of you. It’s our job to guide you and help you forget that you’re even in front of a camera.

Make sure you communicate any insecurities or preferences with us before we begin. We will be able to work around these and highlight your best angles and features – and at the end of the day you will have photos you love.

See you soon!

On my journey of finding & creating great font and colour combinations for my client’s websites, I often (like my fellow creatives) fall down the rabbit hole of “finding inspiration”, which includes (but is definitely not limited to) dribbble scrolling and awwwards websites. From here, the process of trial and error, until it just feels right. So, to help myself out (and my fellow creatives) – I have created this blog post to record the outcome of this process, for anyone else looking for relevant, beautiful and bold font & colour choices that would suit a client website in the law firm / financial space.

The branding varies in complexity, starting with a more straightforward and simple branding style and extending to a more full-bodied complex brand strategy. Enjoy!

1. Satoshi & Roslindale

Body Font:

Satoshi

Colour Palette:

#2a3b4e & #f7f3f1

This combination brings a modern and classic feel to any legal website. The clean lines of Satoshi for the body text ensure readability, which is essential for conveying complex legal information. Pairing it with Roslindale for headers adds a touch of boldness, sophistication and authority, perfect for capturing the essence of a trusted law firm. The deep blue (#2a3b4e) and soft cream (#f7f3f1) colours complement each other, providing a professional, calm, and approachable aesthetic. These colours are a classic, tried and true combination that we have seen law firms / financial firms using in a variety of combinations – and this is the 2025 version. An ideal combination for law firm websites that want to project a modern yet reliable image.

2. TT Hoves & Ivy Presto Display

Colour Palette:

#fef9ef & #5d5d5d & #94a39f & #6e797a

This pairing strikes the perfect balance between modern minimalism and refined elegance. TT Hoves, a geometric sans-serif, keeps things structured and professional, making it an excellent choice for a law firm that values clarity and precision. Meanwhile, Ivy Presto Display introduces a subtle touch of classic sophistication with its high-contrast strokes, giving off an air of prestige. The color palette—featuring muted grays and soft neutrals—creates a grounded, trustworthy feel, while the subtle green undertone (#94a39f) adds a hint of freshness without being overpowering. This combination is ideal for firms that want to be seen as both forward-thinking and established.

3. PP Editorial Old & Axiforma

Body Font: Satoshi

Axiforma

Colour Palette:

A bold, editorial-style branding approach, this combination is designed for law firms that want to stand out with confidence and authority. PP Editorial Old, with its sharp serifs and strong contrast, brings a high-end, almost literary feel to the brand. Meanwhile, Axiforma, a clean and contemporary sans-serif, balances the overall look by maintaining readability and approachability. The deep green (#192616) and warm gold (#feae03) give a sense of wealth, stability, and tradition—perfect for firms that handle high-profile clients or want to exude a premium brand image. If your firm is looking for a branding choice that conveys intelligence, tradition, and influence, this is the one.

4. Feature Display & Neue Haas Grotesk Display Pro

This combination is all about understated luxury. Feature Display, with its soft yet commanding presence, adds a sense of warmth and personality that isn’t often found in traditional legal branding. Neue Haas Grotesk Display Pro, a modern classic, grounds the design in sleek professionalism, ensuring easy readability across all platforms. The deep burgundy (#502223) combined with soft beige (#faf5ef) and warm taupe (#c9b398) creates a sophisticated, high-end atmosphere—ideal for boutique law firms or financial brands that want to emphasize exclusivity and personalized service. This pairing is perfect for firms that want to lean into a more approachable yet premium aesthetic.

Shooting for Impact – A Lifestyle Product Photoshoot for 7 Deadly Swims  https://lakedesign.co/lifestyle-commercial-photoshoot-swimwear-product-photography/ Tue, 13 Aug 2024 21:46:03 +0000 https://lakedesign.co/?p=635 Discover how our lifestyle commercial photoshoot for 7 Deadly Swims showcases swimwear in an empowering, authentic way.

Our recent lifestyle commercial photoshoot with 7 Deadly Swims, a female-owned swimwear brand, is a perfect case study in bringing a brand to life through it’s photography. This shoot wasn’t just about showcasing swimwear—it was about telling a story of empowerment, style, and authenticity.

For small business owners, especially in the fashion industry, captivating and authentic product photography is essential to standing out in a crowded market.

How We Planned the 7 Deadly Swims Lifestyle Photoshoot

Creative Concept & Planning
Mood Board. Location. Models. Timing.

Concept: To kick things off, we took a deep dive into the 7 Deadly Swims brand to fully understand its message and how it should be reflected in the product photography. What makes this brand stand out? What makes it unique?  The client’s goal was to showcase their swimwear in a way that felt authentic, sexy, and empowering, embracing all body types and personal styles. The message? Active swimwear doesn’t have to be boring or shapeless—it can be sexy, too.

Models: We carefully curated a selection of six models and worked closely with the client to choose the three who best embodied the brand’s vision.

Location: Because the brand is all about movement and confidence, we needed a location that reflected that energy — and would deliver a backdrop that would resonate with the customers buying the swimwear. We chose Greenwich Beach, the open shoreline and rolling dunes provided an ideal backdrop for our movement-based shots, reinforcing the brand’s message that fashion-forward swimwear can also be functional and empowering.

We scheduled the 2.5-hour shoot to start an hour before sunset. This timing gave us the perfect window to capture two distinct lighting styles:

HOW IT STARTED – BRIGHT & FULL SUNSHINE

HOW IT ENDED – SOFT & GOLDEN HOUR

Props and Lifestyle Integration: Understanding the brand’s identity, we incorporated props like surfboards, sunglasses, and hats, ensuring the swimwear wasn’t just worn – but brought to life through movement and action.

The Final Outcome:

Authentic, Sexy, and Empowering Swimwear for the Active Woman

Our Approach to Professional Product Photography and Lifestyle Branding

Every lifestyle commercial photoshoot we do is a blend of creativity, strategic planning, and execution. We start with the brand’s vision, gather inspiration from mood boards, and then handle everything — from model selection and location scouting to the final click of the camera. This approach ensures that every piece of swimwear product photography we produce is not only visually stunning but also true to the brand’s identity.

Our advice for small business owners?

💡 Work with professionals who understand all the intricate details that go into a successful branding shoot.

Show us your product and your vibe, and let us take it from there. We guarantee that we’ll not only meet your expectations but exceed them, delivering photos that not only look great but also resonate with your target audience.

Q: What is a lifestyle / commercial photoshoot?

A: A lifestyle / commercial photoshoot blends the elements of everyday life with product photography. It captures products in real-life situations, helping to convey a brand’s identity and message. In the case of swimwear, this might include models engaging in activities like surfing, swimming, or simply enjoying a day at the beach, all while showcasing the product in a natural and engaging way.

Q: How does a lifestyle photoshoot differ from a standard product photoshoot?
A: While a standard product photoshoot focuses solely on the product, often in a studio setting with controlled lighting and backgrounds, a lifestyle photoshoot places the product within a real-world context. This type of shoot aims to tell a story, highlighting how the product fits into the consumer’s life, making it more relatable and appealing to potential buyers.

Q: Why is professional product photography important for my brand?
A: Professional product photography is crucial because it creates a lasting impression of your brand. High-quality images can significantly influence purchasing decisions, improve your brand’s credibility, and make your products stand out in a competitive market. In a lifestyle commercial photoshoot, the added elements of real-world context help potential customers envision using your products, thereby increasing engagement and sales.

Q: What kind of planning is involved in a lifestyle commercial photoshoot?
A: Planning is extensive and involves understanding the brand’s vision, choosing the right models, selecting an ideal location, and deciding on props that enhance the product’s appeal. We also coordinate with the client to create a mood board, which guides the shoot’s creative direction, ensuring that every aspect aligns with the brand’s message and marketing goals (and yes, you can come to the shoot if you want!).

Q: Can you help with the creative direction and concept for the shoot?
A: Absolutely! We handle everything from the initial concept to the final execution. We work closely with you to understand your brand and product, and then we create a comprehensive plan that includes selecting models, locations, props, and a shooting schedule. Our goal is to make the process seamless for you, so you can focus on your business while we bring your vision to life.

Q: How long does a typical lifestyle commercial photoshoot take?
A: The duration of a lifestyle commercial photoshoot can vary depending on the complexity of the shoot, the number of locations, and the variety of shots required. Typically, a shoot can take anywhere from a few hours to a full day. We plan everything meticulously in advance to ensure we make the most of our time on set.

Q: How will the photos from the shoot be delivered?
A: After the shoot, we carefully edit and retouch the photos to ensure they meet the highest standards. The final images are delivered to you in high-resolution digital format, ready for use on your website, social media, and marketing materials.

Q: How do I book a lifestyle commercial photoshoot?
A: Booking is easy! You can contact us through our website or give us a call to discuss your needs. We’ll set up an initial consultation to understand your brand and vision, after which we’ll handle all the planning and logistics to ensure your shoot is a success.

Empowering Your Brand: Behind the Scenes of Callie Croken’s Branding Photography Shoot

In the world of entrepreneurship – making a strong first impression is essential. For women like Callie Croken, a Life & Business Coach, projecting an image that exudes confidence, luxury, and professionalism is a non-negotiable. Callie came to us seeking branding photography that would encapsulate her message: “Make Big Money, While Nourishing Your Body, Mind & Soul.” She wanted photography that not only showcased her as a powerful figure in her industry but also made her feel like a million bucks.

The Vision: Luxury Meets Empowerment

Callie’s brand is all about breaking through the barriers that hold you back from achieving the life you deserve. She needed photography that reflected this—luxurious, classy, and powerful. Her current photography wasn’t hitting the mark for her needs, so she turned to us for a fresh, bold approach. The goal was clear: create imagery that would resonate with her target audience of ambitious women who are ready to take their businesses and lives to the next level.

Check out the results of Callie’s branding photography shoot

The Branding Photography Shoot: Maximizing a Single Location

We had the unique opportunity to shoot on the second floor of Vicinato Ristorante in Charlottetown, PEI. What made this shoot unique – was that we stayed in one location and in one room – yet created multiple distinct looks that each told a different story. This is a testament to what can be achieved with the right photographer and the right lighting. From cozy and approachable to bold and commanding, each set of photos captured a different facet of Callie’s dynamic personality – and her business.

Her Reaction:

“OMG!!! They are amazing!! Damn!! Amazing!! You guys made me look like a model! I don’t even know what to say… I’m blown away, I love them so much!! I’m so grateful!! Thank you so much!!! It was so much fun to work with you both – you really followed the ideas I had in mind and added your own amazing ideas – that I loved!! I loved working with you both, highly recommend!!! There isn’t one picture that I don’t ❤️ – thank you so much!”

The Impact: Confidence Boost and Brand Elevation

Callie now has a collection of high-quality, versatile images that perfectly align with her brand’s message. While the measurable outcomes are still unfolding, the boost in her confidence and the positive feedback she has received from her audience are immediate wins.

Why a Single Location Works: The Power of Versatility

One of the standout aspects of this shoot was how we utilized a single location to create a variety of looks. This isn’t just about convenience—it’s about showing what’s possible when you have a clear vision and a skilled team. Whether you’re an entrepreneur who’s pressed for time or someone who prefers a more controlled environment, a one-location shoot can offer just as much versatility and creativity as multiple settings.

Tips for Preparing for a Branding Photoshoot

Preparing for a branding shoot is more than just picking out your favourite outfits — it’s about crafting a visual story that truly represents your brand. Here are some essential tips to ensure your shoot is a success:

Create a Mood Board on Pinterest

Start by gathering images that resonate with you—whether it’s the vibe, poses, or specific aesthetics you’re drawn to. Creating a mood board is a powerful way to communicate your vision to your photographer. Even if you’re not a visual expert, this collection of images tells us a lot about who you are, what you like, and the direction you want to go. The mood board becomes a visual roadmap that helps us suggest locations and setups that align with your brand and vision.

Decide on How Many Outfits You Want to Wear

Your outfits play a crucial role in the narrative of your branding shoot. We recommend selecting 2-5 outfits that showcase different facets of your personality and brand. Think about your brand colors, the image you want to project, and the variety you want in your final images. Whether it’s a professional power suit, a casual chic ensemble, or something more playful, each outfit should complement the story you’re telling.

Consider Props That Enhance Your Story

Props can add layers to your photos, making them more dynamic and authentic. Think about what represents your daily life or business. For a life coach, this might be a laptop, coffee cup, or a favorite notebook. If you’re in a different industry, such as swimwear, you might consider props like a surfboard, sunglasses, or tropical drinks. The right props can add a personal touch and help convey your brand’s message clearly.

Choosing the right photographer makes it a more personal experience

One of the most common concerns we hear is, “I hate how I look in photos,” or “I’m so uncomfortable in front of the camera.” But here’s the truth—you just haven’t had the right experience yet. We believe that with the right photographer, anyone can look and feel amazing in photos. Our approach is all about creating a fun, relaxed environment where you feel like you’re just hanging out with friends. When you’re comfortable, the camera captures your true essence, not just a posed version of you. It’s our job to guide you through poses, make you laugh, and help you forget that you’re even in front of a camera.

Extra Tip:

Make sure you communicate any insecurities or preferences with your photographer. A good photographer will be able to work around these and highlight your best angles and features – and at the end of the day you will have photos you love!

In the vast digital landscape, web accessibility is not just about inclusivity; it’s about future-proofing your website. As we navigate the evolving terrain of digital accessibility laws, it’s crucial for businesses and web designers to stay ahead of the curve. As Canadian and US laws evolve to emphasize digital inclusivity, understanding and implementing web accessibility becomes imperative. But how do you incorporate accessibility into your website effectively? In this post, we’ll explore practical ways to make your website more accessible, with a focus on two popular tools: UserWay and AccessiBe.

Why Web Accessibility Matters

Web accessibility ensures that everyone, including people with disabilities, can access and interact with websites. It’s not only about ethical responsibility but also about reaching a wider audience. With the Canadian government increasingly emphasizing digital inclusivity, staying compliant with accessibility standards is becoming more than just good practice – it could soon be a legal requirement.

Basic Coding Principles for Accessibility

Incorporating accessibility into your web design involves several steps and considerations.

Here is a general overview of what is required for accessibility:

  • Use semantic HTML tags like <header>, <footer>, <nav>, and <main> to structure your content meaningfully.
  • Ensure that all images have descriptive alt texts.
  • Make sure your website can be navigated using a keyboard, which is crucial for users who cannot use a mouse.
  • Use ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) roles when necessary, but only as a supplement to native HTML.
  • Ensure sufficient colour contrast and allow users to adjust text sizes.

Tools like WAVE (Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool) can be invaluable in identifying accessibility issues on your website. It provides visual feedback about the accessibility of your web content and highlights areas needing improvement.

An Easier Way To Make Your Website Accessible

Navigating the complexities of coding a website with accessibility in mind can be challenging. It often involves making design compromises to ensure full compliance with WCAG 2.1 standards. Thankfully, there’s a simpler solution. Innovative tools are available that automate much of this process, offering a more straightforward path to creating an accessible website. One effective approach is using widgets that can be seamlessly integrated into your site. These widgets provide a non-intrusive way for visitors to tailor your website’s display to their accessibility needs through a user-friendly interface. This means you have the freedom to design your website as you envision, while the widget takes care of adjusting the site for accessibility. Such tools are not only helpful for users with disabilities but also ensure your site adheres to web accessibility guidelines and legislation.

Let’s look at two of our favourite accessibility tools:

UserWay: Simplifying Accessibility

UserWay is the most popular tool that offers an accessibility widget that can added to websites fairly easily.

Pros:

  • Dynamic Pricing: Comes with a free, albeit limited version
  • Customizable: Offers a range of options to adjust the website’s accessibility features.
  • Easy Setup: Quick and easy to add it to your website

Cons:

  • Limited Scope: While useful, it may not cover all aspects of accessibility.
  • Dependent on Original Design: The effectiveness can vary based on how accessible the original site design is.

AccessiBe: A Comprehensive Approach

AccessiBe is another popular tool in the accessibility arena. This is the one we gravitate towards because it not only provides full compliance, their AI scanner makes sure that your website continues to stay accessible as you make updates.

Pros:

  • AI-Powered: Utilizes artificial intelligence to scan and adjust websites for accessibility.
  • Comprehensive: Offers a more thorough approach to accessibility, covering a wide range of needs.
  • Compliance: Provides full WCAG 2.1 and ADA compliance and includes accessibility statement and certification

Cons:

  • Cost: More expensive than some other tools, but is more comprehensive.

Understanding Accessibility Legislation

In the US, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) set the standards for digital accessibility. Similarly, in Canada, the Accessible Canada Act (ACA) is pushing for a barrier-free nation. Ontario has already implemented the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), and it’s anticipated that similar legislation will soon be adopted across other provinces. These laws reflect a growing recognition of the importance of digital accessibility, making compliance not just a legal obligation but also a strategic advantage.

Conclusion

Web accessibility is more than a compliance checklist; it’s a commitment to creating an inclusive digital world. By embracing tools like UserWay and AccessiBe, and adhering to basic coding practices for accessibility, we can make our websites welcoming for all users. As legislation in Canada and the US continues to evolve, staying ahead in web accessibility is not just about meeting standards; it’s about leading the charge in creating an inclusive, barrier-free digital space.

At Lake, we’re strong proponents of web accessibility. Why limit your website’s reach when you can open it up to all potential users eager to engage with your business? Whether you’re aiming to enhance your current site’s accessibility or you’re in the market for a fresh, modern website that’s fully accessible and optimized for all browsers and devices, we’re here to assist. Let’s work together to create a digital space that’s welcoming to everyone.
